Mechanic Falls – Five students enrolled at RSU 16 Adult Education in Mechanic Falls, recently participated in a Ready2Work Manufacturing Program. Students Jamie Dubois, James Francis, Ethan Sanborn, Terry Verrill and Roland Young successfully completed five weeks of intensive classes.  The five-week, 100 hour course was funded by Western Maine Community Action (WMCA), a partner in the CareerCenter system.  The training included an OSHA 10 Certification, computer literacy, and 60 hours of Work Readiness classes.  Students gained the work readiness skills manufacturing employers are seeking. Mock interviews, tours and industry specific presentations were included as part of the curriculum.  “Through this grant WMCA provides services to people in Androscoggin, Franklin, Kennebec, Oxford and Somerset Counties,” shares Patti Saarinen, WMCA Program Site Coordinator in Lewiston. “Many of our services are designed for low to moderate income people and dislocated workers.  Some services are available regardless of income.”  FMI visit the Lewiston CareerCenter, 9 Mollison Way, Lewiston or call 753.9000, or toll-free 1.800.741.2991.  Additional information available www.wmca.org.

RSU 16 Adult Education student speaks at Hall of Flags

Araminta Mayberry delivering her speech

Maine’s adult education students were honored at the State House on Thursday, March 3, 2016.  Those in attendance were from among a pool of over 50,000 adults enrolled in academic, workforce and personal enrichment courses throughout the State.  The celebration highlighted student successes and provided an opportunity for adult learners to share their experiences.

Araminta Mayberry shared her personal journey through RSU 16 Adult Education as one of three Maine Adult Education students to speak at the event.  Having left school as a youth in the 8th grade, she later graduated with her GED from Mechanic Falls Adult Education in 2002 at age 28.  Returning once more in 2014 after years in the baking industry and the desire for a better career, she took advantage of free Maine College Transitions programming in order to prepare for college.  Now in her second semester as a student at Central Maine Community College, she maintains a 3.81 GPA as she works toward her goal to become a Human Resources Professional.

Acting Education Commissioner William H. Beardsley along with State Director of Adult Education Gail Senese also spoke, applauding the adult learners and recognizing their determination and perseverance.
